Fishing Reports
July 22, 2008
It's amazing what a full Moon will do, and sure enough the stripers are back again. Not quite as good as this spring but they are hear and chasing bait. We had a great trip with some good old boys from North Carolina on Monday. Thanks to the Striper God they all caught about six or seven in the mid 20's using Slug-o's and Storm shads, and a few on flies. Joe Herbert has tied some awesome flies for me that are the best. There is plenty of bait from silversides, small herring and tinker mackerel available just about everywhere you go. The chunkers and live bait fishermen are doing much better also. So my friends, the fishing is looking much better along the Southern Maine and New Hampshire coast. August will soon be upon us and I'm sure the Blues and School Tuna will be in also taking advantage of all this bait.

Where have all the stripers gone? That's the big question here on the Northeast Coast. Plenty of bait but very few stripers being caught, the mackerel are still here along the southern Maine and New Hampshire coast. Usually they are nowhere to be found this time of year. We have been lucky and are still catching stripers. Thanks to good old standbys Slug-O's. Hopefully the Full Moon will bring in the big boys this week. Hope to see you out there and the bluefish should be arriving soon.

The big boys are still here and buy the end of the summer if they keep feeding like they are we are going to have some record Stripers here along the southern Maine coast. Last week I fished the Merrimac and we did very well about a half-mile off the mouth of the Merrimac and on Joppa flats. Sand eels were the bait of choice for the stripers and I had just the lure for them. Bill Hurley's new sand eel jig was the hot item. Keith Coddington from Maryland landed two beauties on his favorite Ugly Stick with 10# test, a 36" followed by a 33". Last Friday Joe Herbert fished with me on the Piscataqua, lots of schoolies on his own tied flies. Monday was the Dockside Striper Tournament, we fished the Fly Division with some luck but not enough to beat the 38 1/2" that took first place. Overall the youth division was were the action was with the winner being a 43" striper caught on a live mackerel. The season is flying by some give me a call and lets get out there.

The big fish are still in the Merrimac River on Joppa Flats. Overcast days are usually the best days for striper fishing and today was no exception. The tide was still coming in when I hooked onto this nice 36" using a white Fin-S and Wayne Hathaway hooked this nice 33" on a Alewife Slug – O. After these two fish we caught a few nice size schoolies on the fly. We also got into some nice fish busting bait just as the tide turned to go out in the late morning after seeing some Terns diving on bait. This should be a great week as the weather is calling for overcast days most of the week. Give me call and lets get out there!

Checkout this monster caught on Joppa Flats this morning. The fishing on the flats has been slow but there are some big fish in the 4' water. Scott Wolf caught this 38" cow on a white Fin'S. We released this one and on his third cast caught a 32" beauty. But after that it slowed down with a couple of good hits but no takers. The wind has not been favorable on the flats but there are fish there just not in the numbers as previous years. There is a lot of mackerel at the mouth of the Piscataqua. I'll be fishing the Piscataqua this weekend and we will try live baiting with mackerel. There have also been Porgies in the river so the big boy’s will be chasing them. Hope to see you out there.

They're back!
After one of the hardest winters on record up here in the Northeast signs of the summer fishing season look good. The stripers are back, not in big numbers yet but they are here and that's a good sign. The Rip Tide made her maiden spring voyage on the Piscataqua River this Memorial Day. John Boyd caught the first striper on a Storm Shad that measured 22" his second fish was 20" a great way to start of the 2008 season. We will be fishing the Merrimac River this week where there have been some good reports of lots of schoolie bass with a few in the 30" size being caught. I hope the price of gas doesn't keep any of you from making the trip down here to southern Maine and New Hampshire for the awesome fishing. A lot of my regulars have already booked trips so don't be left out, this just might be our best year yet.

If only we could keep on fishing, but all good things come to an end. This was our last day of fishing for Rip Tide Charters until next spring. We had one of the best fall fishing seasons that I can remember. Lots of bait which means lots of stripers and bluefish with a few school blue fin tuna to make it a very interesting and productive fall season of fishing. Most of the fall season was spent off the Wells and Kennebunkport beaches where the bait was being forced into the coves and along the beachfront. Most of my clients could not believe how such big fish would only be in two feet of water and right in the surf. To all my clients this year a big thank you. This past season was one of my best and you all made it happen. I hope everyone had a great time, for I sure did and will be looking forward to taking you all out in 2008.

The blitz has started! Yes finally we are seeing more and more stripers in the surf. September started with a big bang, Bluefish breaking the surface chasing porgies, stripers chasing down sand eels, silversides and any other baitfish they can eat. We had a great time on Sunday chasing Bluefish from the mouth of the Kennebunk River down to Bald Head Cliff in Ogunquit. The peanut bunker haven't arrived yet, but when they do the stripers and bluefish will have a feast. We did really well with flies, Slug-O-'s and Hogy rigged soft plastic baits. There have been some big stripers taken on live porgies as well as chunks of Wells and Kennebunk Beaches. The Nubble Light area is starting to light up also and we have caught some nice stripers out to the Isles of Shoals. This is what we have been waiting for all summer, the fall blitz If you haven't had a chance to get out fishing with us now is the time! Give me a call and lets have some fun on the water.

Rip Tide has a new look!
Finally after six years we now have casting rails forward and aft on the Rip Tide. Thanks to the expert fabrication of Noel Redman of Redman Fabricators we have aluminum leaning rails that will enable fly fisherman as well as spin casters to safely cast into the rocky shoreline and have a steady leaning post to help aid them in there fishing on the Rip Tide. Noel just moved his operation of building Tee-Tops, Tuna Towers, Specialty boats and custom fabrication to York after being in Saco right behind Saco Bay Tackle for the last 15yrs. He is located on Route 91 just before the overpass in the old Cormier Textile building on the right side headed west. Stop in and visit Noel for all you fabrication needs. He is one of the best on the east coast.

Well the summer is going by faster and faster and it will soon be over before we know it, but there is still a lot of good fishing ahead of us. July was one of my busiest months, and we had plenty of action in the Piscataqua. The schoolies provided plenty of action for light tackle and fly-fishing. Slug-O's still worked the best on the stripers but the snapper blues ate them up pretty fast. We started fishing out to the Isles of Shoals the past couple of weeks and have been doing well on stripers in the high 20's and low 30's. The guys fishing Porgies in the York and Piscataqua Rivers have been doing very well with a lot of fish caught in the 40's. The Football Tunas have arrived and our within reach to be caught. I have seen a lot right behind the Shoals and a lot my friends have landed them from 40lbs to 150lbs, all on light tackle. Hope to be chasing them next week if they are still in the area. Give me a call soon for the Sept. blitz as August is filling up fast.

June 20 2007
These past few weeks we have seen and caught big stripers and lots and lots of schoolie stripers. Last Friday a 45" cow striper was caught on the in coming tide at the mouth of the Piscataqua along with a few in the low 30's and a lot in the 18" to 20". The mac’s have all but disappeared but Pollack work good also, the 45" striper was caught on a live Pollack. We have also fished Joppa flats but things have quieted down a bit from a few weeks ago, but there are still lots of fish to be had.
Joppa had a lot of sand eels and small silver sides. The Pisacataqua has been hot in front of the Navy Yard on the in coming tide, just watch for the birds diving on small river herring. This coming Sunday and Monday is the first annual York Harbor Striper Tournament. It should be a lot of fun and hopefully a lot of fish caught and released back after a photo. Hope to see you all on the water. Capt. Dave
June 1 2007 - The Stripers are back!
After a long winter the stripers are back in Southern Maine and along the New Hampshire coast. The last two weeks we have seen more and more stripers arriving and chasing sand eels, mackerel and shad. The Merrimack has been real good especially on Joppa Flats with fish in the low 30's being caught on flies and light spinning gear. The slug-o's are working real well as always. Mackerel are abundant just outside the Piscataqua River and some nice stripers have been taken on live macs in the mid 30's. The Saco River is also alive with lots of bait and stripers. This coming week I have trips on the Merrimack and the Piscataqua, so I’ll keep you informed where the hottest action is. Give me call and I'll get you into the striper action. Capt. Dave
April 1 2007
Well it may be April Fool's day but one thing is for sure, fishing season is just around the corner, and the Rip Tide is getting its winter cover off this week. The spring Turkey season will soon be here and as soon as I get my gobbler we will be in the water and fishing. This past winter I had a chance to visit some of the Sporting Shows and just yesterday was at the Rhode Island show in Providence. While I was at the shows I had some time to talk with a lot of old friends in the tackle business and I've got all the latest and newest lures to try out this season. The RonZ, Striper Magnet, Hogy, Spine-eel, Tsunami, Lunker City, Slug-O, Gibb's Lures, Yo-Zuri newest and a few secret ones I'll talk about later in the season.
Reservations are coming in now that spring is in the air and folks are planning their vacations. Let's just hope gas doesn't go sky high this summer. If you didn’t get a chance to fish with us last year you missed a good time, so give me a call and I'll pencil you in. Keep in touch and take a kid fishing.
Capt. Dave
October 2006
Well all-good things must come to and end, and so ends the 2006 fishing season. This season started off slow with all the rain we had in May but as the water cleared up and the sun started to warm up the water the stripers came back in full force. Not as many big ones as we would have liked to have seen, but lots of fish. This last few weeks we had blitzes of busting bait and big stripers under them, which made for some great action. The blues where spotty but we did have plenty of action. To all of my clients that I took out this year a big thank you, and hope to see you all next season. I sure had a lot of fun and hope you all did also. Time to get out the bow and do some deer hunting. We will see you next year when we will be starting to fish Joppa flats and the Merrimack River in early May. Have a great winter!
